NordVPN: the pick the 2026 roundups agree on

No other VPN gets named best for streaming as often. TechRadar ranks it first, 01net calls it the best streaming VPN of 2026, and VPN.com puts it on top of its streaming table. The case is consistency: TechRadar counts BBC iPlayer among the services NordVPN unblocks, both CNET and TechRadar list it as working with Amazon Prime Video, and VPN.com credits it with 17 or more working Netflix libraries at roughly 6% speed loss — the lowest of these five.

The numbers hold up. NordVPN’s server page listed 9,259 servers in 149 countries on 23 Jul 2026, connections run over NordLynx (its WireGuard-based protocol), and one account covers 10 devices.

The caveats: TechRadar’s own testing still hit trouble with Prime Video Australia and YouTube US, and Bitlaunch’s repeat testing found NordVPN needed more reconnects than most ranking pages suggest. The streaming evidence is thinner than the price is good. VPN.com credits it with 9 or more working Netflix libraries — the lowest count among these five — and the widest speed-loss spread, 6–21%. Worth knowing: Surfshark merged with Nord Security, NordVPN’s parent, in 2022; both say they operate autonomously on separate infrastructure. Renewal after the intro term is $79.00 a year, with a 30-day refund window.

Proton VPN: open audits and the only real free plan

Proton VPN posts the best Netflix number in VPN.com’s comparison — 20 or more libraries, at 8–16% speed loss — and its live server list showed 20,677 servers in 148 countries on 23 Jul 2026, the largest network here. It is also the transparency outlier: five consecutive annual no-logs audits by Securitum (2022–2026), every report published in full, no login required.

Two limits. TechRadar gives it the lowest score of the four picks it ranks, 83/100.
