NordVPN vs Surfshark: the real differences
Surfshark is the better deal: $2.49 a month intro, $79 a year at renewal, unlimited devices. NordVPN costs more ($3.49 intro, $139.08 a year renewal, 10 devices) but offers 149 countries versus 100, faster independent speed results, and six no-logs audits to Surfshark's two. Pay extra only if you need NordVPN's reach.

Three numbers decide this comparison, and none of them is the advertised price. First, renewal: after the intro term, Surfshark Starter renews at $79.00 a year while NordVPN Basic renews at $139.08 — a gap of $60.08 for every year you stay. Second, devices: Surfshark covers unlimited devices on one plan; NordVPN stops at 10. Third, reach: NordVPN runs 9,259 servers in 149 countries to Surfshark’s 4,500-plus in 100, and the only independent speed numbers available favor NordVPN clearly.
There is also a fact most comparisons bury: these two are siblings, not rivals. Surfshark merged with Nord Security, NordVPN’s parent company, in February 2022. Both say they continue to operate as autonomous companies on separate infrastructure — but your money reaches the same group either way, so the practical differences above are the whole decision. If neither fits, our full VPN rankings cover six other providers held to the same checks.
Figures are from the two providers’ own pricing, server, and legal pages, as of 23 Jul 2026, plus one attributed third-party speed test.

What will you actually pay?
Month to month, NordVPN is the cheaper of the two: $14.99 for its Basic tier against $16.45 for Surfshark Starter. Almost nobody buys these services that way, and on the long plans the order flips.
NordVPN’s 2-year Basic deal costs $94.23 for the first 27 months — $3.49 a month. Surfshark’s 24-month Starter deal costs $67.23 for the same 27 months — $2.49 a month. Then both renew at full price, and that is where the real money sits:
| Period | NordVPN Basic | Surfshark Starter |
|---|---|---|
| First 27 months (intro rate) | $94.23 | $67.23 |
| Renewal, year 1 | $139.08 | $79.00 |
| Renewal, year 2 | $139.08 | $79.00 |
| Total, first 51 months | $372.39 | $225.23 |
Stay 51 months and NordVPN costs about $147 more on the entry tiers. At renewal, that works out to roughly $11.59 a month against $6.58.
Two caveats, both from the fine print. Surfshark’s terms reserve the right to A/B-test pricing — displayed renewal prices “may be subject to Testing” — so the $79.00 figure can vary between users. And Surfshark’s 30-day money-back guarantee covers the initial purchase only; recurring payments are non-refundable. NordVPN shows a 30-day guarantee on every plan. If price is your main filter, our best cheap VPN picks rank the whole market on renewal honesty.
How many devices can one plan cover?
NordVPN allows ten simultaneous connections on ten devices, on every tier. Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections on any paid plan — the only cap is its free trial, which is limited to three devices until the trial ends.
For one person with a laptop and a phone, the limit never matters. For a household pushing phones, laptops, TVs, and a tablet or two through one subscription, Surfshark removes the bookkeeping entirely. That is the cleanest single reason to pick it.
Which network is bigger — and faster?
NordVPN’s server page lists 9,259 servers across 149 countries, a mix of physical and virtual locations. Surfshark lists 4,500-plus servers in 100 countries, all upgraded to 10 Gbps ports. If you need an IP address in a less-common country, check both public server lists before buying — NordVPN’s 49-country lead either matters completely or not at all.
On speed, the best independent reference is CNET’s comparison: it measured an average download-speed loss of 3% with NordVPN and 21% with Surfshark. Surfshark’s own comparison page claims higher peak speeds in its latest tests, which mostly serves as a reminder that vendor tests favor vendors. One independent result is not proof for every connection, but a 3-versus-21-percent spread is too wide to ignore.
Who has the stronger privacy record?
Both companies run RAM-only server fleets — nothing written to disk, everything wiped on reboot — and both hold current no-logs assurance engagements with Deloitte under the ISAE 3000 standard. The differences are depth and domicile.
NordVPN operates from Panama, which it notes has no data-retention laws that would apply to VPN providers. Its December 2025 Deloitte engagement is its sixth no-logs verification, after PwC Switzerland in 2018 and 2020 and Deloitte in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Surfshark’s setup takes more words to describe honestly. The company is Surfshark B.V., registered in Amsterdam, but its terms of service are governed by British Virgin Islands law — calling it simply “Dutch” understates the complexity. Its 2025 Deloitte engagement is its second, after a first no-logs audit in January 2023.
One limitation applies to both: neither publishes its audit report publicly. NordVPN’s is readable only from a logged-in Nord Account; Surfshark’s only from a logged-in customer account. You can verify the engagements happened, but you cannot read the findings before paying. Our NordVPN review and Surfshark review weigh how each handles that trade-off.
Do the protocols separate them?
Less than the marketing suggests. NordVPN defaults to NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol with a custom double-NAT system, and added post-quantum encryption to it in 2025; OpenVPN remains available as an alternative. Surfshark supports standard WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN across its entire server network.
For everyday use both stacks are modern and fast, and neither should drive your decision. NordVPN’s post-quantum work is ahead on paper; Surfshark sticks to the standard, widely reviewed protocols.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Is Surfshark cheaper than NordVPN?
On long plans, yes. Surfshark's 24-month Starter deal costs $67.23 for the first 27 months and renews at $79.00 a year, while NordVPN's 2-year Basic deal costs $94.23 and renews at $139.08 a year. Month to month the order flips: NordVPN charges $14.99, Surfshark $16.45.
Is NordVPN faster than Surfshark?
The independent numbers say yes. CNET's comparison measured an average download-speed loss of 3% with NordVPN and 21% with Surfshark. Surfshark's own comparison page claims higher peak speeds in its latest tests, but that figure comes from the vendor itself.
Does Surfshark really allow unlimited devices?
Yes — every paid Surfshark plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections, per its pricing page. The one exception is the 7-day free trial, which is capped at three devices until the trial ends. NordVPN allows ten simultaneous connections on all of its tiers.
Are NordVPN and Surfshark owned by the same company?
They share a parent group. Surfshark merged with Nord Security, NordVPN's parent company, in February 2022. Both firms state they continue to operate as autonomous companies on separate infrastructure, but a subscription to either supports the same group.
Is NordVPN better for streaming than Surfshark?
Unproven either way — no outlet publishes reproducible streaming-unblocking data for both services. The one hard number that helps: CNET measured far lower speed loss with NordVPN, which matters for high-resolution streams.
