NordVPN review 2027: strong VPN, steep renewal price

NordVPN earns 8.1/10 in 2027: Panama jurisdiction, six independent no-logs verifications (latest by Deloitte, December 2025), RAM-only servers in 149 countries, and post-quantum NordLynx. The weak spot is price honesty — the $3.49 a month intro rate renews at $139.08 a year, roughly $11.59 a month. Budget buyers should check Surfshark first.

How private is NordVPN?

NordVPN operates out of Panama, and that choice does real work. Panama has no data-retention laws that apply to VPN providers, so no statute forces the company to store your connection or activity records. It also keeps NordVPN outside EU and US jurisdiction, per the company’s own no-log policy page.

The infrastructure backs the policy. Every server runs from RAM only: nothing writes to disk, and everything wipes on reboot. NordVPN documents the diskless design on its engineering blog rather than just claiming it in marketing copy.

Trust still needs receipts, and NordVPN’s are unusually long — six independent no-logs verifications in eight years. That record, the RAM-only fleet, and the Panama base earn privacy and trust 9.0/10, the strongest dimension in our rubric, and a big reason the provider sits high in our full VPN rankings.

What do the audits actually prove?

PwC Switzerland examined the no-logs claim in 2018 and 2020. Deloitte took over in 2022 and repeated the exercise in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The latest engagement is an ISAE 3000 (Revised) assurance review: fieldwork ran 10 Nov–12 Dec 2025, and Deloitte issued the report on 12 Dec 2025. Our guide to no-log VPN audits explains what these engagements do and don’t prove — in short, an auditor checks that systems match the policy during the review window, not forever.

Here is the catch: you cannot read the report without an account. NordVPN gates the full Deloitte document behind a Nord Account login and does not publish it openly. Compare Proton VPN, which posts all five of its Securitum audit reports (2022–2026) in public. A gated report still counts — Deloitte’s name is on the engagement either way — but open publication is strictly better for readers. That gap is why transparency scores 7.0/10, the second-lowest dimension in this review.

What does NordVPN cost, and what does it renew at?

On rolling monthly billing there are three tiers: Basic at $14.99, Complete at $19.99, and Prime at $29.99. Basic is the VPN alone. Complete and Prime bundle non-VPN extras — antivirus, a password manager, 1 TB of cloud storage, dark web monitoring, and, on Prime, identity-theft insurance. If you only want a VPN, price the Basic tier and ignore the rest.

The advertised headline is the 2-year deal: $94.23 for the first 27 months, which works out to $3.49 a month. Then renewal arrives at $139.08 a year — about $11.59 a month, more than three times the intro rate. Two things soften this. First, the renewal price is printed on the pricing page itself, not buried in the terms. Second, a 30-day money-back guarantee covers every plan (App Store purchases are refunded through Apple). There is no free plan; Android users get a 3-day trial.

Here is how the intro-versus-renewal picture compares across the market:

Advertised intro price vs what you pay on renewal (USD, as of 23 Jul 2026)
VPNIntro priceFirst-term totalRenews atRolling monthly
NordVPN$3.49/mo (2 yr + 3 mo)$94.23 / 27 months$139.08/yr (about $11.59/mo)$14.99
Surfshark$2.49/mo (2 yr + 3 mo)$67.23 / 27 months$79.00/yr$16.45
Proton VPN$2.99/mo (2 yr)$71.76 / 24 months$83.88/yr ($6.99/mo)$9.99
ExpressVPN$3.19/mo (2 yr + 4 mo)$89.32 / 28 months$99.95/yr (about $8.33/mo)$14.99
Mullvad$5.71/mo flat (€5)no lock-inunchanged since 2009$5.71

One footnote on that table: Surfshark’s terms reserve the right to A/B price testing — “the displayed renewal prices may be subject to Testing” — so its renewal figure can vary between users.

Price honesty scores 6.5/10, the lowest dimension in this review. The number NordVPN advertises is temporary, the number you pay long term is more than triple it, and $14.99 monthly billing sits at the expensive end of the market. Clear disclosure on the pricing page is what keeps the score from falling further.

What do you get for the money?

The protocol stack is current. NordLynx, NordVPN’s own protocol built on the WireGuard framework with a custom double-NAT system, gained post-quantum encryption in 2025; OpenVPN remains available as the fallback. The network is one of the largest we track: 9,259 servers across 149 countries, a mix of physical and virtual locations. Every tier includes ten simultaneous connections.

One gap: per-platform feature parity — which features exist on Windows but not iOS, for example — isn’t documented clearly by the vendor. Check the app for your platform inside the 30-day refund window rather than assuming parity.

Features score 8.5/10. A modern protocol stack and a very wide network carry the dimension; the ten-device cap (Surfshark and Private Internet Access offer unlimited connections) and a torrenting gap covered below hold it back from higher.

Is NordVPN good for streaming and torrenting?

We do not run streaming or speed benchmarks, so this section reports what independent testers publish, with names attached. Reviews at Tom’s Guide and 01net report that NordVPN unblocks Netflix libraries and other major streaming platforms, with occasional site- or region-specific failures. ZDNET and Cybernews both describe it as one of the faster VPNs on the market.

For torrenting, Cybernews calls the service torrent-friendly, but there is a real limitation: NordVPN does not offer port forwarding, a gap both Cybernews and PCrisk flag. Casual P2P users will not notice; heavy seeders and private-tracker regulars will. Streaming and use-case fit scores 8.5/10 on the strength of those published results.

Should you buy NordVPN?

Our score is a weighted sum across five fixed dimensions — the same rubric for every review on this site:

Dimension Weight Score
Privacy and trust 30% 9.0
Features 25% 8.5
Price honesty 20% 6.5
Streaming and use-case fit 15% 8.5
Transparency 10% 7.0
Overall 100% 8.1

The two weak dimensions are explained above: price honesty (an intro rate that more than triples on renewal) and transparency (audit reports gated behind a login).

  • Con:Audit reports sit behind a Nord Account login instead of being published openly
  • Con:Ten-device cap while Surfshark and PIA offer unlimited connections
  • Con:No port forwarding, which Cybernews and PCrisk flag for heavy torrenting
  • Con:No free plan — just a 3-day trial on Android

Who should choose something else

You want unlimited devices or the lowest price. Surfshark starts at $2.49 a month, renews at $79.00 a year, and has no device cap. It has been part of the same corporate family as NordVPN since a February 2022 merger with Nord Security, though the companies say they run autonomously on separate infrastructure. See NordVPN vs Surfshark compared for the full head-to-head.

You want audits you can read, or a free tier. Proton VPN publishes every one of its five Securitum audit reports openly and offers a genuinely free plan (one device, no data cap). Its VPN Plus plan renews at $83.88 a year — cheaper than NordVPN’s renewal. See NordVPN vs Proton VPN compared.

You are done with intro-rate games. Mullvad charges a flat €5 a month ($5.71 at the time of check) at every term length, unchanged since 2009, with no sales and no renewal jump — the trade-off is a smaller network and a five-device limit. Our Mullvad review has the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is NordVPN worth it in 2027?

For most people, yes. It combines a Panama base, six independent no-logs verifications, RAM-only servers, and a 149-country network, earning 8.1/10 in our review. The main reason to pass is price: the $3.49 a month intro rate renews at $139.08 a year, and several rivals renew cheaper.

How much does NordVPN cost?

The Basic plan costs $14.99 a month on monthly billing, or $94.23 for the first 27 months (about $3.49 a month) on the 2-year deal. That 2-year rate is an intro price and renews at $139.08 a year. Complete costs $19.99 and Prime $29.99 a month on monthly billing.

Does NordVPN work with Netflix?

Independent reviews at Tom's Guide and 01net report that NordVPN unblocks Netflix libraries and other major streaming platforms, with occasional site- or region-specific failures. We do not run our own streaming tests, so treat unblocking as likely rather than guaranteed.

Is NordVPN good for torrenting?

Reviewers, including Cybernews, describe NordVPN as torrent-friendly. It does not offer port forwarding, though — a gap Cybernews and PCrisk both note — which matters mainly to heavy seeders and private-tracker users.

How many devices can you use with one NordVPN account?

Ten devices at the same time, on every plan tier. If you need more, Surfshark and Private Internet Access both offer unlimited simultaneous connections.

Does NordVPN have a free trial or free plan?

There is no free plan. Android users get a 3-day free trial; everyone else relies on the 30-day money-back guarantee, which applies to every plan. App Store purchases are refunded through Apple rather than by NordVPN directly.

Where is NordVPN based, and why does it matter?

NordVPN operates out of Panama, a country with no data-retention laws that would apply to VPN providers. No statute compels it to store user activity, which is the legal footing under its no-logs policy — verified six times by independent auditors since 2018.
