ExpressVPN’s case for your money is trust you can check: British Virgin Islands registration, servers that cannot keep data between reboots, and a no-logs policy KPMG examined in 2025. The case against it is arithmetic. The cheapest way in costs $3.19 a month and renews at about $8.33, the monthly tiers run $14.99 to $22.99, and most rivals in our full VPN rankings cost less at almost every step. That tension sets the score: 7.7 out of 10.

Is ExpressVPN private and trustworthy?

Start with the paper trail. ExpressVPN is registered in the British Virgin Islands — in its own words, “a jurisdiction with strong privacy laws” — and builds its product on a no-logs policy.

TrustedServer is the technical backstop for that policy. Every VPN server runs on RAM only, never writes to disk, and reloads the full software stack on each reboot. A server that cannot store data between restarts leaves less for hackers or legal demands to find.

The ownership question deserves a straight answer. ExpressVPN is part of the Kape Group, per its own trust page, which describes certifications “ExpressVPN and the Kape Group secured” in 2025. Nothing in our dataset contradicts the privacy claims, but corporate ownership is part of the trust picture — which is why the audits below carry more weight than any marketing page.

What do the audits actually cover?

The headline engagement is KPMG’s 2025 no-logs audit — ExpressVPN’s third with the firm, announced 25 Jun 2025. KPMG ran an ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 assurance engagement over TrustedServer and the privacy-policy claims and identified no issues, at a reasonable-assurance level. Separately, the TrustedServer platform has been audited by PwC and Cure53.

Two caveats keep Transparency at 7.5 out of 10. First, the KPMG engagement is point-in-time: it attests to the systems as they stood on 28 Feb 2025, and ExpressVPN’s later 2026 Cure53 audits cover other products, not the no-logs policy. What does ExpressVPN really cost?

Three tiers, three billing terms, and a lot of bundling. Basic is the VPN; Advanced and Express Pro layer on non-VPN products — an email relay, a password manager, identity tools, eSIM data, and an AI chatbot — while raising the device cap. Price honesty is the review’s lowest score, 5.5 out of 10, for four reasons:

• The renewal jump. Basic’s 2-year deal bills $89.32 for the first 28 months — $3.19 a month — then autorenews at $99.95 a year, about $8.33 a month. That is 2.6 times the advertised rate.
• A suspended guarantee. The 30-day money-back guarantee does not apply to purchases made during the Summer Tech Sweepstakes promo (11 Jul–11 Aug 2026); the order page’s own table marks it “Not applicable”. It also covers first-time customers only and excludes app-store in-app purchases. Unintended renewals get a 14-day refund window.
• Unverifiable tier pricing. We could not confirm the Advanced and Express Pro 2-year prices — July 2026 reviews quote conflicting figures — so the table above leaves them out rather than guess.
• The market context. After the intro term, Basic renews at the second-highest yearly rate in our dataset — only NordVPN’s $139.08 costs more — while Surfshark renews at $79.00 and Proton VPN at $83.88.

Mullvad’s price is a flat €5 a month shown as its dollar equivalent. One credit where it is due: ExpressVPN prints its renewal prices on the order page itself, and its $99.95 Basic renewal undercuts NordVPN’s $139.08.

What features do you get?

Protocols are a genuine strength. Lightway, the default, is ExpressVPN’s own open-source protocol, written in Rust with post-quantum ML-KEM encryption. A customized WireGuard build with post-quantum protection runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Apple TV, with OpenVPN and IKEv2 as alternatives.

The network spans 113 countries and 214+ server locations. That trails NordVPN’s 149 countries and Proton VPN’s 148, and beats Surfshark’s 100 and Mullvad’s 50.

Devices are capped by tier: 10 on Basic, 12 on Advanced, 14 on Express Pro. There is no unlimited option — Surfshark and Private Internet Access both offer unlimited connections. Features scores 8.5 rather than higher because of those caps and because the extras sit behind tier upgrades.

How is it for streaming and devices?

Streaming is where independent reviewers are kindest. PCWorld reported successful access to Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Apple TV in its testing — PCWorld’s results, not ours; this site runs no benchmarks of its own. App coverage is broad: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Apple TV, per the protocols page.
